Frank Alfano

Meet Frank Alfano, full-stack web developer and Exhibit A Media founder in Hamilton, Ontario. From Commodore 64 programming to advocacy, websites and AI.

Frank Alfano started programming at 12. On a Commodore 64, he learned BASIC and then assembly language, discovering an interest that would eventually bring him back to software development decades later. Even then, he wanted to become an AI programmer, long before artificial intelligence looked anything like the tools we use today.

At 16, cars, motorcycles and other teenage boy activities took priority over time at the computer. Programming was put aside, and his teenage years took him in an unexpected direction: into the courtroom as a defendant. He worked as a courier and pizza driver, spent time street racing, and learned first-hand what it felt like to need someone in his corner.

A lawyer took him under his wing and mentored him through repetition and pressure: learning the legislation, preparing cases, watching closely, and returning to court to put those lessons into practice. At 19, Frank began defending other people. In October 1990, that unlikely beginning became the start of a career in advocacy.

The early years were difficult. Training gave him a foundation; the courtroom taught him how to use it. He learned to examine witnesses, test assumptions, understand people, and keep working on a case when the easy answer was to give up. Over 33 years in Ontario courtrooms, he built a reputation for finding a path through cases that others regarded as obvious losses.

His clients included judges, prosecutors, court clerks, police officers, and their families, people who understood the courtroom and had seen his work. His practice focused on trials, appeals, and difficult issues requiring careful preparation and persuasive argument. Having once needed someone to defend him, he understood the importance of being heard and of knowing that the person helping you was fully invested in the outcome.

That commitment extended beyond his own clients. Frank founded the Ontario Provincial Offences Advocacy Group, served in leadership and education roles with paralegal organizations, and created Bootcamp CPD to teach practical advocacy to lawyers and paralegals. He mentored newcomers and volunteered as a judge in student advocacy competitions. Teaching required him to make complicated ideas clear and useful. That discipline continues to shape his work.

Alongside that practical experience, Frank earned an LL.B. from the University of London and an LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. His legal education strengthened the habits that had already become central to his approach: research carefully, question what appears obvious, organize the evidence, and explain the answer clearly.

Technology remained part of his working life. His practice had been paperless since 2008, and he used cloud-based practice management, client portals and digital documents to improve how work was organized and delivered. In 2011, he began using WordPress and learning HTML, taking his first steps into building for the web while continuing his courtroom career.

In 2024, Frank returned to coding and AI. It was a return to the curiosity and ambition that had first drawn him to programming at 12, now informed by decades of running a business, serving clients and solving difficult problems. Today, he is a full-stack web developer, working across the visible parts of a website and the systems that make it function behind the scenes.

His former paralegal career continues to shape that work. The habits developed in court now inform how he approaches websites and software: understand the situation, question assumptions, find the underlying problem, test the proposed solution, and make the result useful to the person who needs it. His legal education and practical experience bring another perspective to technical decisions, particularly where clear communication and careful reasoning matter.

As Founder & Chief Developer of Exhibit A Media, based in Hamilton, Ontario, Frank builds custom websites, business platforms and automation systems for Ontario service businesses. He brings together full-stack web development, AI, legal education and years of client-facing experience to help businesses communicate clearly and work more effectively. Whether he is developing a client workspace or connecting the systems behind a website, his focus remains practical: understand what matters to the client, do the work thoroughly, and build something that serves a real purpose.

Frank works alongside Jana Smith, Partner & Business Development, and Deanna Opasky, Partner & Client Management, bringing development, business relationships and client care together for every project.
